\u201cMarriage and the family are in crisis,\u201d declared Pope Francis. \u201cThis\nrevolution in manners and morals has often flown the flag of freedom but in\nfact it has brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human\nbeings.\u201d The false flag of freedom might also be called the false flag of\nentitlement, a banner hoisted by those who conspired to bring about the catastrophic\nredefinition of marriage in America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ntragedy of the Obergefell<\/em> decision was trumpeted in the strongest possible\nterms by its four dissenting justices as they decried \u201cthe transformation of a\nsocial institution that has formed the basis of human society for millennia\u201d\n(Roberts) and the distortion of \u201cprinciples on which this Nation was founded\u201d (Thomas),\u201d\nwarning that this \u201cnaked judicial claim to legislative \u2014 indeed,\nsuper-legislative \u2014 power\u201d (Scalia) will be \u201cexploited by those who are\ndetermined to stamp out every vestige of dissent\u201d (Alito). How did such a\ndisaster come to be? <\/p>\n\n\n\n The improbable\npath that led to it has been traced by journalist Christopher Cardwell in a\nbook whose title suggests the grand deception of the gay marriage movement: The\nAge of Entitlement<\/em>. The author takes us back to 2003 when \u201cJudge Margaret\nMarshall of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court announced that there was\nno rational basis for denying gay people the fruits of marriage.\u201d But, Cardwell\ncontinues, \u201cthere was sleight of hand involved. Marshall reasoned from<\/em>,\nnot to<\/em>, a redefinition of marriage, taking it not as a foundation anterior<\/em>\nto and recognized<\/em> by government but as a welfare institution established<\/em>\nby government, like a dog park or a VA hospital, which carried a \u2018cornucopia of\nsubstantial benefits.\u2019 The more important anthropological question of what\nmarriage was could thus be replaced by a different question, that of equal\naccess to state favors\u2026 That approach reversed the burden of proof on all marriage\nquestions that came before courts\u201d and \u201coverturned the understanding that\nmarriage was something antecedent to government.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile,\n\u201cgay marriage was also the single cause that most united the richest and\nbest-connected people on the planet,\u201d notes Cardwell as he names numerous corporate\ngiants that bankrolled the cause, along with \u201cthe investors George Soros and\nMichael Bloomberg, tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos,\u201d and\n\u201centertainers David Geffen and Brad Pitt,\u201d among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Such was\nthe avalanche of influence that led five United States Supreme Court justices to\ndecide Obergefell<\/em>, effecting a sea change in American culture. What they\ncould not<\/em> change was the timeless truth, as old as civilization itself\nand memorialized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, that \u201cThe family\nis the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection\nby society and the State.\u201d Or, in the words of Michael Novak, \u201cWhat strengthens\nthe family strengthens society\u2026.
