Last week, a California newspaper, the Los Cerritos News, issued a blockbuster news report that it had confirmed that California Governor Gavin Newsom was engaged in a sexual affair with a top aide. Newsom, who is married and has four children with his wife whom he refers to as the state’s First Partner, has reportedly been carrying on with his Deputy Chief of Staff, Lindsey Cobia. Newsom recently promoted Cobia and gave her an expanded portfolio dealing with strategy and communications.
In contrast to the media’s breathless reporting when news of an affair engaged in by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger broke a few months after he left office, the mainstream media has thus far been silent about Newsom’s conduct. This reported affair is the second time that Newsom has been outed after having an affair with a high-ranking member of his government staff. As Mayor of San Francisco in 2007, Newsom was forced to admit that he had engaged in a sexual affair with his Appointments Secretary, who was married to Newsom’s campaign manager. The woman later told reporters that the affair ruined her professional career and her personal life. Newsom, meanwhile, escaped unscathed after apologizing to voters, promising that he had learned his lesson, and pledging to never again engage in such conduct.
Now a second newspaper account has emerged of Newsom’s current affair. According to the San Joaquin Valley Sun, the newspaper was peppered throughout 2020 with corroborating rumors of infidelity by Newsom. Calling it the “worst kept secret in Sacramento,” the newspaper reported the secret is, “That Gov. Gavin Newsom was engaged in multiple alleged extra-marital affairs over the course of 2020, a time where many of his orders shuttered nearly all personal and economic activity across the nation’s largest state.”
The newspaper did not reveal the name of the woman currently involved with Newsom. As noted, the Los Cerritos News previously reported that it was Deputy Chief of Staff Lindsey Cobia. However, the article from the Sun did raise the prospect that the media’s silence about Newsom’s affair could soon end. According to the newspaper, both the Los Angeles Times and the publication Politico are said to be chasing the story. The newspaper described the potential LA Times piece as “an impending expose.”
It is not necessarily unusual for the media to let a major story like this go unreported for a period of time while they attempt to confirm details of the matter and develop their own sourcing of information and documentation. The original piece published by the Los Cerritos News did not contain specific information about their sources, instead quoting anonymous sources inside the Governor’s administration that confirmed that many staffers were aware of the affair and were “ready to jump ship.”
The other potential explanation for the media’s silence in not covering the affair is much more concerning – that they realize it could give a powerful boost to the Recall effort that is near-certain to qualify for the ballot this fall. Once qualified, voters will have the opportunity to remove Newsom from office and replace him with another Governor. Most reporters with California’s major media are liberals and could be expected to oppose the Recall due to the possibility it might depose Newsom in favor of a conservative candidate. This nefarious explanation – akin to the old mafia tactic of “Omerta,” or “silenzio” to protect common interests – is very troubling and sadly reminiscent of recent behavior by the media. For example, in the 2020 presidential election the mainstream media and their allies in Big Tech largely buried the story of potential corruption by Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.
Whether we are in the proverbial calm before the storm, or experiencing Omerta should be known soon.
