EU pressured by leftist groups towards abortion support fund

Over 170 leftist civil society organizations, including the Center for Reproductive Rights and International Planned Parenthood Federation, are ramping up pressure on the European Commission to establish an EU-wide abortion support fund. In a letter sent Wednesday to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other officials, the groups demand action on the “My Voice, My Choice” European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), which collected over one million signatures in 2025. The initiative seeks to “facilitate and safeguard” abortion access across the bloc, framing it as a solution to “threats” on women’s rights.

The Commission must decide by March 2 whether to propose legislation. Proponents insist the fund would be voluntary for member states and not undermine national health systems. However, this push exemplifies the radical left’s assault on the sanctity of unborn life, treating abortion as a “fundamental human right” per a January 21 opinion from the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

Conservatives fiercely oppose, warning of abortion tourism financed by EU taxpayers. German MEP Christine Anderson (ESN) branded the ECI a “cult of death,” arguing it erodes national sovereignty over health policy—a core EU competence reserved for states. Pro-life voices decry the initiative as opening doors to taxpayer-funded destruction of innocents, prioritizing ideological agendas over moral protections for the vulnerable.

The Commission reiterated on December 16 that the ECI doesn’t interfere with national abortion laws. Yet this mounting pressure highlights Brussels’ overreach, threatening Europe’s Christian heritage and family values.
