EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola has called for the recognition of “same-sex marriage” throughout the European Union. She published her demand in a Facebook video on May 17, which is considered an “International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.”

She said that recognition of those unions allows same-sex partners “access to social services, to health, to education.” During the coronavirus pandemic, many families were stuck in countries “where their rights and status were not recognized”, she noted.

In the EU, “same-sex marriages” or marriage-like same-sex partnerships are recognized in 19 of 27 member states.
