A 50-year-old man identified as Mohammed has been remanded into custody by police in Ghana’s Northern Region after allegedly defiling a 14-year-old primary school pupil and forcing her to undergo an abortion. According to reports, the suspect impregnated the minor at Nyanshegu in Tamale and then secretly took her to a private health facility to terminate the pregnancy without the knowledge or consent of her parents. He has been charged with defilement and causing abortion.
On February 20, 2026, he was arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate Court 1 and remanded into prison custody by Magistrate Stephen Tabiri. The case has been adjourned to March 4, 2026.
The victim’s father, Mohammed Salifu, said the family is determined to seek full justice. He revealed that two local chiefs and several opinion leaders visited their home to pressure them into settling the matter privately, but the family refused. “Two chiefs and some opinion leaders in our community came to our house to plead with us to withdraw the case, but we refused and insisted that we want justice for my daughter,” Salifu stated.
Sources also report that the family has received threats from individuals believed to be connected to the accused. This case highlights the grave evil of the sexual exploitation of children and the horror of abortion, which ends the life of an innocent unborn baby. It serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to protect vulnerable girls from predators and to defend the sanctity of every human life from the moment of conception.
